Between 1970 and 1973 I made a series of works with the title Object Music. Here are photographs of one of them, done in April 1971. In each action random objects collected from the surrounding area were placed in a grid on the floor. In this example each object was named on an attached label. The main feature of the action was the reading of a list of the names in random order. As the names were read out those who were there looked around the grid trying to identify each object. In a sense the work was a dance of the viewers’ eyes as they searched for each object – a randomly choreographed dance. As with some other actions the participants were encouraged to look carefully at what was around them. As in many actions Charles Garrad and Keith Wood were important participants. The score diagram for the work is included below.
And one shot of another Object Music – probably from 1972 – again with Charles and Keith, and Ken Hickman (one of the Antibodies trio).
