In May-June 1985 I presented an exhibition of work, titled Objects & Apparitions, at the Aspex Gallery in Southampton, UK – it consisted of a selection of recent paintings. One interest at that time was examining the way in which mental images, signs and symbols would appear, change and disappear, and how these could be notated and represented in two dimensions. In a way the work became more and more about the structure of consciousness, the ways in which thoughts, feelings, images and narratives are endlessly forming and reforming in the embodied mind. There are many references to tribal artefacts and iconography, and to animals and organic forms.
Here is a small selection of these works – again apologies for the poor quality of the slides.
The first two images are of works produced slightly earlier that seem to anticipate some of the later concerns.
